YMCA Norfolk is now recruiting students for a new Level 2 qualification in Youth and Community Work that aims to mix practical youth work with the knowledge to underpin it.
YMCA Norfolk has been working with young people for many years and has a wealth of experience in delivering youth work.
Nick Blanch, who will be delivering the course, which is due to start in October, has worked in schools, led church youth groups and currently is the manager for the community and schools work arm of YMCA Norfolk.
He said: “Whether you’re starting out or are experienced in youth work, doing it as your job or as a volunteer, this is a great opportunity to develop your youth work practice.
“While we often work with young people because we care about them, it’s really important to provide activities that are of a high quality. Quality doesn’t depend on expensive resources but on knowledgeable and skilled youth workers.”

The level 2 youth and community qualification has three modules on informal education, exploring community and assessing and understanding young people's needs. They span a variety of topics that cover the principles, values and skills that underpin youth and community work.
Weekly three-hour tutored sessions will be interactive, drawing on the experiences of everyone in the group and will tie in with existing youth work that candidates are either already doing or maybe about to start. The sessions will be delivered during the day making it accessible for busy youth workers who need evenings available for their youth activities.
Students will build a portfolio of work that will evidence their practice in connection with their learning and improve their reflection skills.
The course lasts for 20 weeks and is delivered on behalf of the YMCA George Williams College. The qualification is fully accredited by ABC Awards.
Norwich Youth for Christ youth worker, Pete Tyson, said: “This course is a fantastic way to develop the skill level and number of qualified youth workers available to meet the needs of young people’.
“YMCA Norfolk is showing great long-sightedness in providing a long overdue education course for youth workers. Hopefully, this will go some way to supporting the voluntary sector, including the local churches, in bridging the gap that has been left with recent youth service cuts and meeting the needs of young people in Norfolk.”
