Schools role with YMCA Norfolk benefits Laura
Volunteering with the YMCA Norfolk schools team has helped set one Norfolk student on the path to a successful career in social work.
Laura Medler (right) finished her A-levels last year and had a strong desire to go to university and study as a social worker. Knowing that the universities look for experience as well as knowledge, she took a year out to explore ways she could work with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
A social worker recommended she approach YMCA Norfolk and since November 2010 Laura has been volunteering at Valley Primary School with the YMCA Schools and Community Team.
Initially working alongside Kevin Dynes, the YMCA Pastoral Care Worker, she was able to see exactly what the role involved and how much of an impact one person could have on a school community. She has since run mentoring sessions and a lunchtime club for some of the girls.
Explaining the impact the experience has had on her, Laura said: “Through being involved with the YMCA I have really seen how important it is that children are given the social and emotional support that they need in a school environment, as it can be fundamental to so many other areas of their lives.”
Laura feels the voluntary work has been a huge benefit: “This opportunity is giving me time to investigate a specific area of work which I am interested in, as well as allowing me to develop my own skills and confidence through having 'first hand' experience!"
