YMCA residents enjoy football training in Norwich
Since February 2011, a committed group of YMCA Norfolk hostel residents have been participating in weekly football training sessions at the YMCA sports centre in Trowse near Norwich.
Sessions last one hour and are based on different skills which are practiced in small drills and games before a match is played at the end.
The football coaching is delivered by Jason Mawby, who is on a work placement with YMCA Norfolk. Jason was a resident at the YMCA hostel on St Giles and gained his Level 1 FA coaching award through attending Street Life Soccer.
On his work placement, Jason has learnt a lot about the admin work in sport that goes on ‘behind the scenes’ and he is now on his Level 2 FA coaching course to further his coaching skills. He hopes to work as a full-time sports coach in the future.
The weekly football sessions provide a positive activity for YMCA hostel residents as well as helping to improve their health and well-being.
Jess Tyson, YMCA Norfolk Health and Well-being Development Worker, said: “We hope the football will continue through the spring and summer months - the young people are thriving from it and we have seen improvements in fitness already. We need financial support to keep running, some young people are without sports trainers or tracksuit bottoms and this can be a problem.”
