Learning to trust and be positive

MadelineLight2MARCH 2010: This month's Reflections comes from Revd Madeline Light. Norwich Central YMCA is in the parish of St Stephen’s Norwich, where Madeline is Priest in Charge.

My father had polio when he was 27 years old. This meant that he spent the rest of his life in a wheel chair; my parents could not have more children; his ability to work was affected and for many years they were uncertain about the type of roof they would have over their heads. Their favourite verse from the Bible was from a letter to the church in Rome; “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him." This is a real challenge.

I remember that when my husband was made redundant, I found that I had put more faith in his ability to work than in God, despite the example of my parents.

In all hard situations the key is to have open eyes to see the good, as well as enduring the bad. We all have the choice to look for the silver lining. If it is hard to do this for yourself, find someone else who can understand your hardships and give you some ideas of a positive way forward.

A PRAYER: Lord, help me to trust in your love for me (and my family); to see the good whilst I endure the bad times. Please give me the opportunity to share how I feel with someone who will understand and help me find a positive way forward. Amen
